This course covers the history of Buddhism from its origins in Nepal and India in the sixth century BCE to its spread across both Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) and Northeast Asia (China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Bhutan and Mongolia) over the next millennium and a half. It will look at the major branches of Buddhism, their subdivisions, and the doctrines, practices, and eminent persons who helped shape them.
